The Rt Rev Stephen Cottrell (Chair)

Stephen Cottrell has been on the board since September 2011. He has been Bishop of Chelmsford since 2010 and before that was Bishop of Reading. He is a passionate evangelist and his entire CV is rooted in evangelism. He was a founder member of the Church of England's College of Evangelists. His previous jobs have included being a member of the Springboard Team which was the evangelism initiative of Archbishop George Carey, and the Diocesan Missioner for Wakefield. The General Synod of the Church of England nominated Bishop Stephen to be a Board member and both the Archbishops of Canterbury and York have encouraged him to be the Chair of Church Army.

Canon Mark Russell (Chief Executive Officer)

Mark was appointed as Chief Executive from October 2006 and came to Church Army from being Youth Minister at Chorleywood. Since 2005 Mark has served on the General Synod of the Church of England and was appointed as the youngest ever member of the Archbishops' Council.

The Rev Jude Davis (Vice Chair)

Jude was elected to the Board in November 2016 and is Vicar of a group of three parish churches in the Peak District. Before training for ordination at Ridley Hall Cambridge she served on the office staff of the then Wilson Carlile College of Evangelism. She is committed to Church Army’s vision and her parish in Hathersage have been great supporters of Church Army’s work.

John Whitfield (Treasurer)

John was elected to the Board in November 2016. He is an Accountant by profession, and was a Partner with Price Waterhouse Coopers in London where he was one of their senior team. John is now retired and lives in Castleton in the Peak District and is a gifted musician.

The Rt Rev Alan Abernethy

Bishop Alan was co-opted to the Church Army Board in December 2015. He has been Bishop of Connor since 2007 and before that served as rector in Ballyholme parish in the Diocese of Down and Dromore from 1990. His particular interests are in mission and spirituality.

The Ven Dr John Applegate

John Applegate is currently the Course Principal at the All Saints Centre for Mission and Ministry. He is based on the Warrington campus of Chester University and has overall responsibility for the course and students. Prior to this he served as Archdeacon of Bolton and before that as an academic in Manchester University and Area Dean of Salford.

The Rev Captain Rob Barker CA

Rob was Commissioned in 1998 and was elected to the board in November 2010. He leads the Church Army Bus Project and Mission base across the Diocese of Chester. He is also Associate Minister to Ellesmere Port Parish Church and runs a nautical men’s outreach project.

Canon Christine Corteen

Chris took up the role of a Trustee of the Board in 2016. She lives in Dorset and is the Chair of the House of Laity in the Salisbury Diocese and is also a Lay Canon of Salisbury Cathedral. As a member of General Synod she is contributing to the review of lay ministry in the Church of England. Chris is keen to see the discipleship of all God’s people deepen and gain in confidence in order to effectively bring others to know God for themselves in their lives. Chris worked in local government for 38 years in finance and retired in 2015. She will contribute to the work of the Church Army as a member of the Finance Committee.

Joanna Cox

Joanna Cox joined the Board in 2008, and serves as the National Advisor in Adult Education and Lay Discipleship for the Church of England. She previously worked in Southwark dioceses, and has taught Cross Cultural Studies and Spirituality in the department of mission at the Selly Oak Colleges and CMS Crowther Hall. Before that taught Geography in schools both in the UK and Zambia. She worships at the Church of the Ascension in Balham, London.

Steve Eccleston

Steve Eccleston has been a board member since September 2011. He is currently Assistant Director of Legal Services for Sheffield City Council and specialises in public law and litigation. He also sits on an Assistant Coroner. Steve was appointed to the Board on the recommendation of the Bishop of Sheffield and he worships at All Saints Church in Aston, Sheffield, where his wife is the Rector.

The Rev Sam Follett

Sam was elected to the board in November 2015. He is a Curate and Head of Students at Holy Trinity Brompton and is Founding Director of Bridge Ministries UK. He was one of the first to join the Xplore programme and, in 2009-2010 he worked as the PA to Mark Russell, our Chief Executive.

Rt Rev Robert Gillies

Bishop Robert was elected to the Board in November 2016 and was the Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney from 2007 to 2016. He is committed to church growth, evangelism and pioneering more fresh expressions in the church.

Sister Dorothy Needham CA

Dorothy Needham was elected as a Board representative of Church Army Evangelists in March 2012. She was commissioned in 2000 and works in Bolton making links with community particularly through schools and encouraging churches to reach out beyond church walls.

Captain Graham Nunn CA

Grahan Nunn was elected as a Board representative of Church Army Evangelists in November 2009. He was commissioned in 1991 and works as Diocesan Children's Missioner in the Diocese of Canterbury as well as further afield with BRF.
