A Mission-shaped Church for Older People

Over the last year we have hosted two "Mission-shaped Church for Older People" conferences in Sheffield (November 2008) and London (October 2009) in partnership with the Leveson Centre.

For both conferences talks were given by Mark Russell (CEO of Church Army) and Revd Dr James Woodward, which can be downloaded below. You can also download main headlines from the group sessions, feedback from both conferences and notes from the groups themselves (see links below).

November 2008

Key issues raised on the day:

  • The need to release potential of older people
  • Avoid working in isolation from other age groups/agencies/wider church
  • How to cater for all ages under heading of older people?
  • How to share faith with those who adopt a pick and mix approach to spirituality
  • The need to talk more easily about death
  • Getting generations together
  • More literature on work with older people in wider church
  • Raise philosophy of modelling and valuing that we are who we are because of who we are in Christ and NOT because of what we do.
  • Listening to group of people we're reaching out to and not categorising according to age
  • Too much segregation? Catering for diversity but remaining in community across that diversity
  • The need to listen to de-churched
  • In our role as facilitators for ministry and mission to and with older people, what are our assumptions? Are the right?
  • Church Army/Leveson Centre could offer vital role in facilitating the sharing of stories
