Rhodri Morgan opens Church Army £1 million Cardiff Homeless Project

The Welsh Assembly First Minister Rhodri Morgan officially opened Ty Bronna, a £1 million project for homeless young people, on Friday (24 January). In the Fairwater district of Cardiff, Ty Bronna – Welsh for “House on the Hillside” - replaces Church Army’s 19 year-old Danescourt Project and provides 13 individual rooms, recreation and kitchen areas and an extensive resource centre. These facilities will also be available for use by the local community. The Bishop of Llandaff, the Rt Rev Barry Morgan, blessed the new building.

The First Minister spoke of “This wonderful project” and marked the occasion by burying two time capsules. The first contained artefacts drawn together by children from Fairwater Primary School reflecting their work, the history of the renovated listed building and the life of their community today. The second capsule was filled with items collected by the residents of Ty Bronna and included Church Army literature and badge, a Danescourt handbook, a CD and drawings produced by residents and current coins.

The First Minister praised the four-year partnership that had brought funding from the National Assembly, Cadwyn, Church Army, Barclays Bank, Cardiff County Council and CADW, the historic buildings agency.
