“Building Trust and restoring Hope”

Church Army has drawn on the New Year message of “building trust and restoring hope” from its Vice-President, the Archbishop of Canterbury, for its Lent appeal.

The main thrust of the appeal centres around the Streetreach project which engages young people from different communities across the religious and political divide in Northern Ireland.
Captain Philip Johanson, Church Army’s Chief Secretary explains: “This is an imaginative and exciting project and Church Army resources are at the heart of this innovative project, in partnership with Summer Madness. The initiative has enabled young people to put their faith into practice and Steetreach has become a powerful means of reaching out to others with the Christian messages as they see and experience it being lived out.”

The project encourages young people to travel around some of Belfast’s poorest areas clearing streets of rubbish and graffiti, washing cars and windows, undertaking gardening and serving food and drinks.

Positive results are already emerging from the project. James had been abusive to a Streetreach team worker but eventually joined in the gardening work, through which a barrier was broken down. At an evening concert at the local school, James gave his life to the Lord. It was the Streetreacher he had abused who prayed for him and led him to Christ.
This is just one example of where Church Army projects are making a difference to the lives of individuals and communities at the cutting edge.
