Don't get spiked this Easter

Wendy_Sanderson_spikka_stoppa_2005Church Army evangelist, Wendy Sanderson, is warning clubbers to take extra care over the Easter weekend. Cardiff night club chaplain Wendy is worried that young women who are out for a night on the town could find themselves out for the count. Against their will. But Sister Wendy is no kill joy; she’s a clubber herself and she does have a simple solution to ward off danger. It’s called a spika stoppa and it prevents bottled drinks getting spiked.

Sister Wendy said: “This is going to be a massive weekend in Cardiff , and the clubs are going to be full of young people having the time of their lives. But I am concerned that there are number of predatory young men out there who are intent on spiking drinks, with sexual assault in mind. I’ve heard countless stories from young people who have suffered this trauma and it can scar them for life. Using the spika stoppa could make a real difference and we’ll be giving them away over this weekend. They’ll find us at Club Exit on Charles St over the weekend and we’ll be delighted if we give them all away.

“The clubs that have seen these spika stoppas are very supportive. They recognize that this little gadget helps them provide a safe environment for their customers.”

The Spika Stoppa was developed by Robert Bresenton and Gary Daniels of GR Tool and Jigwork in Llantrisant. The motivation behind this invention came after a friend of Mr Bresenton's daughter was the victim of a drink-spiking incident. The device fits into the neck of a bottle and allows a straw to be inserted for drinking while making it difficult for drugs to be placed in the drink.
