Dalek encourages church congregation to get out more for mission
25 September 2006
Daleks are more likely to be heard to utter exterminate rather than be involved in a church sermon, but yesterday at Eltham Park Baptist Church, a life-size dalek, made by church member Tim (not Tom) Baker was on hand to encourage the church to get out more for mission as part of a special Church Army Sunday service.
Dr Who's lifelong nemesis was unveiled as part of a service involving the congregation 'travelling back' in time to see artefacts from the past including a model of the Millennium Dome, a roman pot, coal from the Titanic, a sixteenth century belt buckle and a 430 million year old trilobite.
Church Army's David Coleman who organised and led the service comments, "It's always good to be able to surprise people about what they will find in church and when I realised Tim had built a life-size dalek I thought it would be great for the kids and the sci-fi fans in our church to meet him. The link between Dr Who as the well-known time Lord and Jesus Christ as the Lord of time was a sermon theme too good to miss."
Church Army Sunday was held on 24th September and is the opportunity for the 125 year old mission agency to remind the church about the importance of mission with 60% of the population who have no meaningful contact with church.
