Bishop of Guildford supports Church Army as part of his Lent Appeal

2 Feb 2007

Bishop Hill Guildford Diocese. The Bishop of Guildford, The Rt Revd Christopher Hill, has offered his support for Church Army as part of his yearly Lent Appeal. Bishop Hill chose Church Army along with Jubilee Action, a Guildford based charity to be recipients of his 2007 Lent Appeal and is appealing to parishes and individuals to consider supporting these two charities close to his heart.

Bishop Hill explains, "Both these charities deserve our committed giving to support ministries which in their widely different ways address needs in worlds beyond parish life. Our gifts this Lent could make a real difference to the Church Army and Guildford’s own Jubilee Action."

Edna Darko-Sarkwa, Head of Fundraising at Church Army, is delighted that the Bishop of Guildford has chosen to support the society through his appeal. Edna says, "The training of ordinary men and women as evangelists is central to all we do. I very much hope that the diocese of Guildford will engage with the Bishop’s appeal as he seeks to support our work throughout the UK and Ireland."

Church Army’s own  Lent Appeal was launched last week, focusing on the significance of praying, giving and receiving. The appeal which has gone out to around 10,000 parishes and individuals calls on supporters to prayerfully and financially remember the work that Church Army is doing, reaching people in their everyday lives.

In addition to the Lent Appeal, a free 12-page Lent resource written by Peter Graystone, author of 99 Things to do Between Here and Heaven. The resource Praying, Giving and Receiving, features 40 short reflections taken from the book of Matthew which can be used for meditation or reflection. It has gone out with the appeal to parishes and individuals, and Church Army hopes it will serve as a useful tool to enable people to come to a deeper awareness of God during this Lent season.
