Graham Nunn asks Whose Birthday?
9 January 2009
Churches in and around Maidstone united with the Fremlin Walk shopping centre, to bring the Christmas spirit to the high street at its lowest point for many years. Led by Richard Read from St Luke's Church (and using the talents of Church Army's Graham Nunn, and children's workers from churches and the Family Trust) "Whose Birthday?" gave busy parents a chance to shop, whilst their children had some fun with the whole idea of Christmas spirit.
From Saturday to Tuesday (2023 Dec) the good people at Fremlin Walk shopping centre made an entire shop available for crafts, videos and quizzes that explored what 5-11 year-olds consider to be the real meaning of Christmas. 30 children took part in the hour-long sessions. They watched excerpts from films like "The Polar Express", comparing its message with the traditional Christian nativity story, and answering questions to win prizes.
Church Army Officer Graham Nunn has a wealth of experience in making the Gospel message come alive for children and young people: "This was a great opportunity for the churches of Maidstone to connect with the community, and demonstrate the importance of Jesus' gift to the world. He came down to Earth for everyone and this Christmas time that meant busy parents, excited children and a retail industry that is very worried about its future. We were delighted to have this chance to add to the joy of Christmas...and hopefully turn "Whose Birthday?" into a regular annual fixture in Maidstone."
Both HOPE08, Little Shoppers Stay Safe and Silent Lights are partners in this venture to reduce stress, increase fun and get everyone talking about the real meaning of Christmas.
