Life is tweet as Church Army passes 100 mark!
20 March 2009
Church Army is on twitter, and after just one month has gained 100 followers!
is the world's fastest-growing social network and micro-blogging service, enabling its users to send and read 'tweets' (brief updates of text). These tweets are displayed upon a user's profile page, and are also delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them.
Twitter began life three years ago, this month, as a research and development project in San Francisco. Its enormous popularity is due to the quick and easy nature of tweets, which can be no longer than 140 characters. This makes 'tweeting' more of a conversational network, with the simple question of "What are you doing?" at its heart.
Thus, people use twitter to tell the world about anything and everything, from what they are eating for breakfast to Barack Obama's regular tweets to his supporters, during his campaign to be elected President of the USA.
Probably the most famous 'celebrity' moment for twitter to date was actor and writer Stephen Fry's trapped-in-a-lift series of tweets. The various short messages sent and received by Fry had him released from the lift in record time, and became a story told and re-told throughout the media.
Whilst Mr Fry has in excess of 100,000 followers, Church Army is proud to have broken through the 100-follower barrier this week. Followers now include John Sentamu (the Archbishop of York), Ruth Gledhill (of the Times newspaper) and, well YOU, if you follow this link and join in the fun!
Church Army's Online Services & Internal Communications Manager, Captain Neil Thomson says: "Since joining twitter we have found it a great way to inform our supporters, twitter followers about news as it happens, ask for prayer, and let people know about new film content on our website. We've also found it great to find out what others are doing, and get news and feedback faster than before."
