Church Army on a mission to Heal Africa

                                                                                                                          28 September 2009

The Head of Church Army Africa, Richard Mayabi, visited the offices of Church Army UK for the first time this month, and spoke of the mightily ambitious project that is Heal Africa.

Church Army Africa's headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya, where its Evangelists partner with the Anglican Church in transforming society throughout Africa. These headquarters are adjacent to a densely populated area characterised by slum settlements and low-income earners. Richard Mayabi in Sidcup office

To begin addressing the needs of their local community, Church Army began a nursery school which expanded to a primary school in 1985 and then into the Church Army Academy, which now has an enrolment of 500 students.

But, as Richard outlined, the vision for the Heal Africa project is a little larger! The project is based on the following premise: "We believe that the Church is God's primary instrument for social transformation and God's enduring presence in the communities."

So Heal Africa aims to develop 3,500 holistic churches in Africa by the year 2015. These churches will have four major areas of focus: Health; Education; Access to Justice and Leverage wealth creation. Church Army Africa has already begun the H.E.A.L. Kenya Pilot Project, developing holistic churches in partnerships with local dioceses and church leaders.

If the pilot project is successful it will create 20,000 jobs and foster 260,000 destitute children in addition to placing 500 chaplains in schools and colleges.
