Ferrier Estate project wins top prize in national magazine awards
23 Nov 2009
Superkidz Community Trust, which works to build positive relationships through a kids club and community support for 1,200 children and their families on the Ferrier Estate in Greenwich, has been awarded the title of "Inspiring Project" in the Inspire Magazine Awards 2009.
Superkidz received a trophy and £500 of vouchers from church publicity specialists CPO at a special reception in Parliament on 19 November. Director Helen Russell - pictured here - said the award was a huge encouragement: this means so much to the 65 of us on the team. Director Helen Russell said she and her husband (Church Army Evangelist Nick Russell) felt called by God to the Ferrier, one of south Londons notorious estates, to develop a community-led approach to help local people come up with their own solutions to local problems.
Over the last year Inspire the UKs largest circulation monthly title serving the Christian community has been inviting readers to nominate individuals who are inspiring role models along with churches and projects making a positive impact on their communities.
Superkidz was nominated by Lydia Jones of Lee Green and was among nine shortlisted candidates three in the Inspiring Project category and three in both the Inspiring Individual and Inspiring Church sections who were whittled down from nearly 150 nominations by judges drawn from the Inspire editorial team, its publisher CPO and partners CMS, Church Army and Stewardship.
Said Inspire Editor, Russ Bravo: In todays tough economic climate where many communities are hurting, its really encouraging to hear time and again of Christians based in local churches who getting alongside those in need, mentoring teenagers and families, bringing help and hope and just making life better for so many. The Awards help us point this out, profile some of the great work going on, and encourage others to do the same.
