Churches Together transforming communities

News Release: 23 June 2010

David Evans A former Metropolitan Police officer-turned-private detective has been named as the new head of a churches coalition in Weston.

Captain David Evans, a Church Army Evangelist, is the new President of Weston Churches Together, and is now looking to unite the churches to help thousands of Weston people.

The move represents a significant change of direction for David, who served in the Metropolitan Police for 15 years before becoming a private investigator - a role that inevitably saw him deeply involved in the murky world that comes with that territory.

So it is quite a leap, then, from that old life to a new life as a pastor in Weston, where David is the co-ordinator and trustee of Street Pastors Weston-super-Mare, and is also working with North Somerset Council on faith issues too.

David, aged 62, said: “I’m just an ordinary bloke. This is an example that God can change the worst of men and use them in His work. I want the 36 Weston churches to work together for the community 24/7 and not just Sundays, because the Church is there to help people. God’s message of good news is there to change lives and give hope, and we want to see that in Weston.

Weston churches carry the torch of Christ and are the hope of the town. They are there to be the voice of the voiceless and to help the broken, hurting and lonely. I love Weston and it has fabulous potential. It might have horrific drugs problems, but God and the churches can help.”

David says evidence shows - both locally and nationally - that where the Church, local government and the police work closely together, communities do change for the better.
