Archbishop visits homeless bus project

News Release: 03 October 2011

AlanPark The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has visited a Church Army bus project which reaches out to homeless people in Derbyshire.

Church on the Bus is a fresh expressions community which was set up by Evangelist, Alan Park. Each week Alan and his team of volunteers offer practical and spiritual support to more than 60 people in Chesterfield, Matlock and Clays Cross.

As part of his three-day visit to the Derby Diocese, the Archbishop was given a tour of Church on the Bus and was then driven to his next engagement by Alan and his volunteers.

Alan said: “It was great to tell the Archbishop about Church on the Bus and how we are building Christian community among those who are vulnerable and experiencing homelessness. Since the project was set up in 2004, many people have given their lives to Jesus.

“Before I became a Christian I was homeless for seven years but my life was changed when I came to know Jesus. Therefore, I want to share the hope of the gospel with others.”

Alan attributes the success of the project to the unique atmosphere created on the bus: one of stability and peace that allows barriers to break down slowly. The project also provides people with food, warm drinks, toiletries and clothes.

Mark Russell, Church Army Chief Executive, said: “Church on the Bus is a truly inspirational project which is making a difference to people’s lives on a daily basis. I’m really pleased the Archbishop was able to visit and officially recognise its work.”
