A 10-year-old boy from Tyne & Wear has braved freezing temperatures to take part in a North Sea “dip” to raise money for Church Army.

Oliver Cake shares his birthday with Church Army’s founder, Wilson Carlile, so decided to mark the occasion by running into the sea 10 times.

Family and friends were there to cheer him on and afterwards they warmed up with tea and coffee at a nearby pub.

Oliver said: “The sea was very cold and I was pleased I wore my wet suit! I wanted to raise money for Church Army because it helps people who don’t have much in life.”

His mum and evangelist, Kathleen Cake, said: “Oliver did absolutely brilliantly and we are all really proud of him. It was great that so many people came along to the beach to support him.”

Oliver has raised more than £500 for Church Army and would like to thank all those who sponsored him.
