Centre of Mission for vulnerable women in the North of England

Vulnerable Women“Hannah” is a Church Army Evangelist in the north of England who works with a team of volunteers to reach out to vulnerable women involved in street prostitution, those experiencing domestic violence and those with mental health problems. The women the team meet are some of the most vulnerable and exploited individuals of our cities. The project has its own house which women can visit for support and to enjoy being in community.

Hannah said: “A lot of the women we meet are extremely isolated and we want to provide them with a safe place where they can relax and ‘just be’. We are also committed to helping women to help themselves. Practically we provide the women with hot meals, clothes, a place to rest and access to telephones. We encourage them to develop life skills through creative activities and cooking. There are also daily prayer meetings in the house chapel. Many of the women view the house as their church.”

Relationships are also developed with individual women through regular street outreach and visiting them when they are in hospital or in prison. For the women the team meet, trust is a fragile element and it is easily fractured, so the focus is to be consistent for the long-term. Trust is developing and lives are gradually being transformed.
